Lab Investigations

This activity is designed as a demonstration.  This is not designed for the students to perform using the scientific method.

Ultimate Eruptions

Materials:
Unopened 2-liter of soda and diet soda
Wintergreen Life Savers (Breath savers do not work well)
Thin straw or coffee stirrer
Towel and/or mop

Procedure: Please Note: Best to do this activity outside.

1.     Carefully open the regular soda. Position on the ground so it will not tip over.

2.     Unwrap the whole roll of Wintergreen Lifesavers and line them up on the straw. (It is possible that you will need to crush them, just see if the lifesaver is smaller than the opening of the bottle.) Position the straw over the top of the bottle, so that they can drop in all at the same time.

3.     Warn spectators to stand back. Drop the straw with all lifesavers into the bottle at the same time. Then get out of the way!

4.     Watch the eruption.

  1. Repeat with Diet Soda. Then compare to the regular soda.
